For Car PC / Car Computer users, up until now, there has been no commercially available DAB / DAB+ radio unit that can be connected to your Car Computer and allow you full control via your touch screen. The only options were to stick with FM radio (for which there are a couple of units that work in this environment available but often suffering from interference problems and / or software that doesn't work correctly) or leave your existing radio head unit fitted to your car as well as the Car Computer, both of which are not desirable to many people.

Our Ultimate Computer DAB / FM Radio unit changes this. Powered and controlled via USB with audio output via a 3.5mm audio jack to avoid interference, you can simply connect up this unit into your Car Computer and control it directly via your touch screen with audio piped through an available line in socket and back out through the speakers.

For those of you who are unaware, DAB / DAB+ is a digital radio standard that is popular in Europe as well as other countries such as Australia. A full list of countries that broadcast in DAB is listed further down. In many countries, more stations are available on DAB than on FM. A few countries, including the UK in 2015, have announced their intention to switch off FM broadcasts and solely support DAB.

This radio unit uses the Venice 7 chip designed and manufactured by Frontier Silicon whose chips are at the heart of 7 out of 10 DAB radios worldwide. The control / power board of this unit has been designed around the Venice 7 chip and tweaked for the Car Computer environment to avoid interference.

With the quality of FM on this unit, it also makes it the perfect unit for countries that do not have DAB, such as the USA. This unit is also perfect for people who just want a Windows based radio.

Software for using this unit directly in Windows (XP, Vista and 7 - 32 bit and 64 bit) is available as well as plugins for both Centrafuse and Ride / Road Runner. Documentation for the Windows DLL used by our standalone application and plugins is also available to allow you to create your own application or integrate the radio with other software.

  • A Windows based computer optionally running Centrafuse or Ride / Road Runner.
  • A spare USB port.
  • A Mini A to Mini B cable.
  • A spare 3.5mm Line In jack.
  • A 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable.
  • A DAB antenna / aerial with an SMB female connector or an appropriate converter cable.

Even with the simple debug interface I have it sitting on my desk with a piece of wire in the antenna socket listening to both crystal clear FM and DAB+. I'm running Windows 7 x64 and this device is running flawlessly even through sleep / resumes. If I sleep while it's playing and hit a key to wake the PC I can have either DAB or FM audio playing within 2 seconds, about 3 seconds before the monitor even turns back on. Upon initially unpacking the unit I plugged in a USB cable, used a piece of wire for the antenna connection and some stereo ear plugs and using the Windows test program had clear FM and DAB+ indoors on the table within minutes. With the correct car antenna connection the signal is just as strong and error free on the move.
